Acquiring music rights

When you are making a documentary, you will want to include some great music that helps to create the right atmosphere, set the tone, or compliment the footage or narrative.

 

You can’t just grab a load of tracks off iTunes and use them in your video. Any music that is copyrighted needs to be treated with respect, and you need to retain the rights to use it. You have to take great care to adhere to this, or your film can never really make it anywhere without being at risk from a claim.

 

The copyright rules are even more subtle than you might think. Say you were filming a documentary in a pub, and there was a popular tune playing in the background of the footage. You wouldn’t be able to show this footage for a great length of time in the documentary, without seeking permission from the owners. Read more...
